The ship, built in 1912, set sail from Amsterdam to Porto with a cargo of chocolate

Date:

Amsterdam-based startup EcoClipper has successfully restored and refurbished the 111-year-old sailing ship, DE TUKKER, with the aim of utilizing it for sustainable cargo transportation. The vessel recently completed its maiden voyage from Amsterdam to Porto, Portugal, carrying a shipment of delectable chocolate from renowned Dutch company Chocolatemakers. The cocoa beans were sourced from the Dominican Republic, transported by another EcoClipper cargo ship, TRES HOMBRES.

Historic Ship Finds New Purpose

DE TUKKER, originally built in 1912 as a merchant vessel, served various roles over the years, including sailor training. Now, it has been revitalized for commercial shipping by EcoClipper. With a crew of five members and five trainees, the ship reached the Port of Porto on May 13.

Sustainable Trade and Return to Sea

Upon arrival, DE TUKKER will unload its cargo of chocolate and load wine and olive oil for its return journey. Equipped with over 300 square meters of sail area, the vessel is capable of carrying 50-70 tons of cargo.
Regular Route through Europe

DE TUKKER will follow a designated route through Northern and Western Europe, making stops at ports such as Noirmouth, Saint-Nazaire, Penzance, Torquay, and London. The ship’s itinerary showcases the potential for sustainable shipping solutions within the region.

Embracing Environmental Consciousness

EcoClipper sees this initiative as an essential milestone in the resurgence of sail-powered commercial transportation. By highlighting the environmental friendliness of sailing ships, the company aims to emphasize the power of sails for efficient cargo transport.

Embracing a Greener Future

The successful restoration and deployment of DE TUKKER demonstrate the commitment of EcoClipper and its partners to embrace eco-conscious practices in the shipping industry. This venture marks a positive stride towards reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable trade in a world increasingly focused on environmental concerns.
This revival represents a significant step towards large-scale, eco-friendly transportation by sailing vessels on the open seas.
