The Health Benefits of Tea: A Growing Trend in 2023

Date:

Independent retailers are leading a tea revolution in 2023, as consumers seek innovative and functional tea products beyond the traditional bag of tea and milk. According to Angharad Goode, an analyst with Mintel, tea is becoming an appealing emotional support for consumers in stressful times. As a result, there is a growing demand for more specific types of tea, such as Sencha, Lung Ching or Chunmi.

Innovation in the Tea Industry

Independent retailers are well-positioned to capitalize on this tea revolution. Tea has been reimagined as a functional drink, offering a range of health benefits and flavor innovations. For instance, Freya Twigden, founder of Fix8 Kombucha, highlighted that the catechins in green tea have been scientifically linked to cancer prevention, leading to an increase in its popularity. Matcha powder is also becoming a trendy alternative to coffee, as it comes with a certain ritual and is highly nutritious, rich in antioxidants and high in caffeine. This shift towards health and wellness is driving innovation in the tea industry, leading to more complex flavor profiles and a wider range of low sugar and low-calorie options.

Serving 2023 Consumers

Consumers in 2023 are also looking for a more personalized tea experience, where they can learn about where and why their favorite tea is grown. This growing interest in the provenance of tea is further driving innovation in the industry. For instance, Kat Hall, senior brand manager for Broadland Drinks, creator of Twistea Sparkling Alcoholic Tea, emphasized that consumers are willing to try new flavors. Tea is no longer just a comforting beverage, but a treat that won’t break the bank, she added. Independent retailers can leverage this trend by offering a wide range of premium tea products to cater to their customers’ diverse preferences.

The tea industry is evolving. As tea continues to grow in popularity and evolve, there are endless possibilities for industry development.
