Danish architecture firm Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) and 3D printing leader ICON have partnered with hotelier Liz Lambert to reimagine and rebuild El Cosmico, a campground hotel in Marfa, Texas. The project aims to innovate luxury camping in the Texan desert by relocating and expanding the campground to a 62-acre desert area, and introducing a collection of radical new dwellings.
Innovative architectural approach
The project will extend and rebuild the existing El Cosmico campground, showcasing an entirely new architectural approach made possible by large-scale 3D printing. The use of 3D printing will automate the construction process and allow for the creation of structures with curved, hut-like shapes using a proprietary cement-like mixture called Lavacrete. The design will include domes, arches, vaults, and parabolic forms. ICON’s proficiency in creating soft and curved surfaces will bring the design to life, producing unique and innovative shapes.
Collaboration for an exceptional project
In a statement, Lambert said she had a vision for the evolution of El Cosmico that includes several spaces that add to the experience for guests and locals, such as a pool, a hammam, and more space for art and skills-building workshops. The use of 3D printing will allow for the fulfilment of this vision quickly, sustainably, and efficiently. The collaboration with BIG and ICON allows for the pursuit of the formal and material possibilities of cutting-edge 3D printed construction. Lambert’s legacy for reimagining hospitality combined with the nature and culture, art and landscape of Marfa, has been the perfect fit to pursue a new architectural vernacular language for El Cosmico.
A performance pavilion in Austin
As part of the project, El Cosmico will build a 3D-printed performance pavilion in Austin in collaboration with The Long Center for the Performing Arts. The pavilion will embody the same design themes as seen in the new development in Marfa, including perfect geometries, and organic forms. It will serve as a landmark and gathering space for culture and community in the heart of downtown Austin. The pavilion opened on March 15, 2023, in time for the city’s South by Southwest festival.
The El Cosmico project is scheduled to start taking reservations in the summer of 2023. El Cosmico will continue to blend art and nature while providing unique experiences for its guests.
