Tanzania Gears Up for National Development Vision 2050

Date:

Tanzania’s Vice President, Dr. Philip Mpango, has expressed his confidence in the country’s economy and said that with successful cooperation in preparation for the National Development Vision 2050 it could be one of the strongest in Africa. He made the remarks while launching the preparation process for the National Development Vision 2050 in Dodoma. According to Dr. Mpango, Tanzania’s economy has been growing at an impressive rate of 5.2% on average, and the country has achieved lower-middle-income status in 2020. He added that Tanzania’s economic growth rate is higher than other countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, which stand at an average of 3.6% to 3.9%.

The Vice President acknowledged that Tanzania is facing several challenges such as poverty, adverse weather conditions, and global economic shocks. But he is optimistic that Tanzania’s economy will continue to grow stronger in the next 25 years, with the preparation process for the National Development Vision 2050 starting in 2025.

Key Issues

Four key issues have been considered for the coming 2050 National Development Vision, according to the Vice President. These include ensuring the best life for all Tanzanians, strengthening peace, security and good governance, building a well-being community, and having a comprehensive and competitive economy. However, Dr. Mpango also pointed out that poverty in Tanzania remains high, especially in rural areas where it stands at 31.3%. Some regions, such as Kagera, Tabora, Singida Dodoma, and Kigoma, still lag behind in terms of the poverty index.

The Vice President emphasized the need to consider several issues in drafting the coming National Development Vision, including having a consolidated economy, tapping all pending opportunities, and looking at forest products and tourism opportunities. He praised the selected members of the team for being picked to prepare the Vision 2050 and said that the government and all Tanzanians have high expectations for them. The new vision is expected to reflect the vision of Tanzanians for the next 25 years and bring economic revolution, said Dr. Mpango.
