Numerous awards and fellowships have been announced by various art organizations. From photography to theater, sculpture to printmaking, these awards and fellowships provide artists with financial support and recognition for their artistic endeavors.
Multiple Awards Announced
The Preis der Nationalgalerie 2024, an award administered by Berlin’s Nationalgalerie, has chosen four artists to receive its prize for the first time ever. Pan Daijing, Daniel Lie, Hanne Lippard, and James Richards will each produce a new work that will be on view at Berlin’s Hamburger Bahnhof in April. Meanwhile, the National Gallery of Canada and the Sobey Art Foundation have announced the long list for the annual Sobey Art Award, featuring 25 talented artists. Among the selected artists are Alan Syliboy, Barry Ace, Michèle Pearson Clarke, Wally Dion, Marigold Santos, Justine A. Chambers, and Gabrielle L’Hirondelle Hill. The short list will be announced in June, with a winner chosen in November.
Supporting Artistic Projects
A number of art organizations have also announced fellowships aimed at supporting artists and their projects. The National Gallery of Canada (NGC) has awarded five photographers the prestigious Scotiabank Photography Award, with each recipient receiving $10,000. The Right of Return USA has selected six artists for its 2023 fellowships, each of whom will receive a $20,000 grant.
Inaugural Fellowships Announced
The Center for Art, Research and Alliances (CARA) has announced the winners of its inaugural fellowships, with E’wao “Rocky” Kagoshima and Beatriz Santiago Muñoz being awarded $75,000 each to support their artistic projects. The Oakland-based Kenneth Rainin Foundation has also awarded its 2023 fellowships to Mohammad Gorjestani for film, Joanna Haigood for dance, Related Tactics for public space, and Sean San José for theater, each of whom will receive $100,000 to further their artistic practices. The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans has selected its 25th class of graduate student fellows, with each fellow eligible to receive up to $90,000 to support their graduate studies. Yehimi Cambrón Álvarez, one of the selected fellows, will be pursuing an MFA in print media at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
These awards and fellowships not only provide financial support for artists but also recognize the important contributions they make to society through their creative expressions.
