Government to Establish Five Special Economic Zones to Boost Job Creation

Date:

The Kenyan government has announced plans to establish five Special Economic Zones (SEZs) across the country as part of its efforts to create job opportunities, empower the youth, and drive sustainable development. This ambitious initiative is expected to provide an enabling environment for both local and international investments.

Prioritizing Kisumu County
Treasury Cabinet Secretary (CS) John Mbadi revealed that Kisumu County is a top priority for this program. Approximately 10,000 acres of land in Kibos, Miwani, have been earmarked to establish one of the SEZs. The Treasury has pledged significant budgetary allocations to develop industrial parks, free trade zones, and business service parks to benefit the local communities.

“The Treasury will allocate substantial funding in the next budget to kickstart the development of these zones,” CS Mbadi said during a church service in Nyando Sub County. The Kisumu SEZ will address business barriers such as high energy costs, limited transport linkages, restricted market access, and bureaucratic inefficiencies.

Kisumu’s Strategic Potential
Kisumu Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o commended the government’s commitment to the SEZ initiative, emphasizing the county’s untapped resources and strategic location.
“Kisumu is endowed with huge land, a skilled workforce, favorable climate, and access to the East African market via road and Lake Victoria,” he noted. The county aims to attract investors to capitalize on these resources, producing goods for both local and international markets.

Strengthening Investment Networks
Governor Nyong’o also highlighted Kisumu’s upcoming role in hosting the African Sub-Sovereign Network Conference (AFSNET) from November 25 to 27. The conference is expected to be a game-changer, bringing investors and business partners from across Africa to strengthen trade and investment networks between Kisumu and other nations with devolved systems of governance.

Key Leaders in Attendance
The announcement was made in the presence of Energy CS James Wandayi and East African Community CS Beatrice Askul, among other prominent leaders. Their collective support underscores the government’s resolve to ensure the SEZ initiative is a success, fostering economic growth and job creation.
