South Korea Pledges $6 Million to Support the “Grain from Ukraine” Initiative

Date:

South Korea has announced a $6 million contribution to the World Food Program’s “Grain from Ukraine” initiative, reaffirming its commitment to combating global food insecurity. The initiative, launched in 2022, delivers vital Ukrainian grain to countries struggling with hunger and drought.

Second Vice Foreign Minister Kang In-sun disclosed the financial commitment on November 24, 2024, during a meeting of the “Grain from Ukraine” initiative. In her address, Kang emphasized South Korea’s dedication to strengthening international cooperation to address the ongoing global food crisis.

Addressing Hunger Across Continents

The “Grain from Ukraine” program, in partnership with the United Nations World Food Program, has united over 30 countries and international organizations. By the end of 2023, the initiative had delivered more than 170,000 tonnes of Ukrainian grain to famine-stricken regions, including Ethiopia, Somalia, Kenya, and Yemen. The program has been instrumental in saving approximately 20 million people from hunger, as noted by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on November 23, 2024.

A Global Effort Against Famine

This humanitarian effort highlights the power of global solidarity in addressing food shortages caused by climate change, geopolitical conflicts, and economic instability. South Korea’s financial support will bolster the initiative’s mission to provide life-saving assistance to vulnerable populations in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.

Moving Forward

South Korea’s pledge underscores the nation’s role as a proactive participant in the global fight against hunger. The “Grain from Ukraine” initiative continues to inspire international collaboration, proving that collective efforts can make a significant impact on global food security.
