South Africa to Fast-Track Domestic Gas Exploration to Bolster Energy Security

Date:

The South African government has announced a major push to fast-track domestic gas exploration and the development of related infrastructure projects. This initiative, officially launched by the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE), is a direct response to the nation’s long-standing energy supply crisis and aims to significantly bolster energy security while supporting broader economic resilience and industrial growth.

The move signals a priority investment in the domestic energy sector, which has been a key bottleneck for South Africa’s industry and growth due to the intermittency of the state utility Eskom’s power supply. The strategy focuses on leveraging the country’s natural gas resources, particularly potential finds in the Karoo basin and offshore reserves, to provide a cleaner, stable energy source that can complement intermittent renewable energy generation.

The government intends to streamline the regulatory and permitting processes for these strategic gas projects to accelerate their development. The goal is to establish a viable Gas Master Plan that ensures a reliable domestic energy supply, attracts necessary foreign direct investment into the upstream sector, and ultimately helps drive the nation’s “Grow and Secure” strategy.
