Saudi Arabia’s entertainment sector is rapidly transforming into a vital contributor to the Kingdom’s economic diversification and quality of life under Vision 2030. According to a recent report by the Ministry of Investment, the sector is projected to create 450,000 jobs and contribute 4.2 percent to the Kingdom’s GDP by 2030.

Key Developments in the Entertainment Industry

  1. Investment Growth:
    • In the third quarter of 2024, the Kingdom issued 34 investment licenses for entertainment projects, reflecting a 13 percent increase compared to the previous quarter.
    • From 2020 to Q3 2024, a total of 303 investment licenses were issued.
  2. Cultural and Tourism Impact:
    • Over the past five years, Saudi Arabia hosted 26,000 events, attracting 75 million attendees.
    • The number of inbound tourists participating in entertainment activities reached 6.2 million in 2023, a 153.3 percent increase from 2022.
    • Inbound tourist spending in 2023 was SR4 billion ($1.07 billion), up 29.03 percent from the previous year.
  3. Local Engagement:
    • In 2023, the entertainment sector drew 35 million local tourists, a 17 percent increase from 2022.
    • Local tourists spent SR4.7 million in 2023, slightly lower than the previous year but still showcasing strong domestic engagement.

Vision 2030 and the General Entertainment Authority

Established in 2016, the General Entertainment Authority (GEA) has been instrumental in the sector’s growth. Milestones include:

  • The reopening of cinema halls in 2018, marking a cultural shift in Saudi Arabia.
  • Hosting large-scale events and festivals that promote Saudi culture and attract global visitors.

The entertainment industry’s rapid development supports Vision 2030’s broader goals of reducing reliance on oil revenues and positioning Saudi Arabia as a global tourism and cultural hub.
