The President of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF), Mohammed Jalood, recently announced promising news regarding the return of Russian weightlifters to international competitions. This statement, made during the IWF Congress in Bahrain on December 4, signals a significant step forward for Russia’s participation on the global weightlifting stage.
During the Congress, Jalood extended his congratulations to Dmitry Vasilenko, the newly elected president of the Russian Weightlifting Federation (RWF). He hinted at the drafting of a roadmap on December 5, detailing the pathway for Russian athletes to compete in the European Weightlifting Championship and the World Championship by 2025.
Participation as Neutral Athletes
In May 2023, the IWF Executive Board allowed weightlifters from Russia and Belarus to participate in international events, provided they compete as neutral athletes. However, athletes must meet specific criteria, including confirming they have no contractual ties with state security agencies or armed forces.
Despite these conditions, the RWF rejected the requirements for neutrality, deeming them unacceptable. This has led to a period of exclusion from major events, including Olympic qualifying tournaments and the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
Future Outlook
The announcement reflects a potential shift in policy, allowing Russian weightlifters to reclaim their place in international competitions. A formal roadmap and further discussions will clarify the terms for their inclusion in the coming years.
