Russia has announced a major investment push in Africa, with plans to allocate 500 million rubles ($5 million) to support projects across the continent as part of its three-year budget proposal for 2025.
This initiative will be directed through subsidies to Russian-selected organizations engaging in African development efforts, according to government plans.
The program underscores Russia’s abundant mineral resources, a point highlighted by Alexander Kozlov, the head of Russia’s Ministry of Natural Resources.
Kozlov emphasized that Russia is a world leader in natural resources, with extensive reserves of key minerals like gas, diamonds, nickel, cobalt, gold, silver, platinum, and iron.
This resource wealth positions Russia as a pivotal player in the global mineral market and a vital partner for African countries.
As part of its commitment, Russia has already launched projects through Rosgeo, a leading Russian geological company, in African countries such as Benin, Sudan, Djibouti, Angola, and the Central African Republic.
The scope of these efforts is expected to broaden, with new ventures planned in Zimbabwe, Algeria, Chad, Mozambique, Sierra Leone, and Mali.
Russia aims to strengthen its partnerships by forming resource alliances with African nations.
Kozlov noted that these alliances would help to stabilize and regulate global markets, particularly given Russia’s substantial share of critical resources, including 55% of the world’s diamonds, 46% of palladium, and significant shares in gold, platinum, cobalt, phosphorus, and zircon.
These collaborations are expected to benefit both Russia and African countries by optimizing resource management and market influence.
The proposed budget, if approved, is set to bolster Russia’s economic and diplomatic ties with Africa, signalling a strategic shift in resource partnerships that could shape the global market landscape.
