Qatar Investment Authority (QIA), the sovereign wealth fund of Qatar, has announced a significant minority stake acquisition in Sauber Holding AG, Audi’s future factory team for Formula 1. This strategic investment aims to propel the Audi F1 project toward long-term success in one of the world’s fastest-growing sports.
A Landmark Partnership
As a trusted investor in the Volkswagen Group, QIA’s partnership with Audi highlights a shared vision for motorsport excellence. Mohammed Al-Sowaidi, CEO of QIA, described Audi as a “premium partner of choice with a rich motorsport legacy.” Al-Sowaidi expressed confidence in Audi’s Formula 1 ambitions, adding that the investment aligns with QIA’s focus on ventures with high-growth potential.
“Our investment will support Audi’s vision and direction in entering Formula 1 and help realize this exciting opportunity,” said Al-Sowaidi. Formula 1’s expanding global reach, increased fan engagement, and commercialization prospects further enhance its appeal as a prime investment opportunity.
Empowering Infrastructure and Team Development
The capital injection will enable Audi’s facilities in Hinwil and Neuburg to scale up operations, meeting the demanding technical standards for the 2026 F1 regulations. Gernot Döllner, CEO of AUDI AG and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sauber Motorsport AG, emphasized that QIA’s investment demonstrates the “trust and confidence” in Audi’s F1 strategy.
“This additional capital accelerates the team’s growth and marks another milestone in our long-term strategy,” said Döllner. The collaboration energizes the dedicated teams at both facilities, fostering a robust foundation for Audi’s F1 debut.
Key Milestones and Leadership
Audi’s Formula 1 journey has already seen significant developments, including the full takeover of Sauber in March and the appointment of seasoned professionals like Mattia Binotto as CTO and COO, and Jonathan Wheatley as team principal. These strategic moves underscore Audi’s unwavering commitment to achieving competitive excellence in Formula 1.
The recent announcement of Gabriel Bortoleto, a 20-year-old rising star, joining experienced driver Nico Hülkenberg on the team roster is another critical step toward a dynamic and balanced lineup for the 2026 season.
A Vision for the Future
As Audi prepares for its 2026 Formula 1 debut, QIA’s investment serves as a powerful catalyst for growth. This partnership not only strengthens Audi’s capabilities but also reflects the transformative potential of aligning visionary enterprises with innovative investment strategies. With a clear roadmap and strengthened infrastructure, the Audi F1 project is poised to become a formidable force in motorsports.
