Doha, Qatar: The Qatar Philatelic and Numismatic Center recently held its annual auction on Friday, presenting a rich selection of rare collectibles at its headquarters.
A total of 323 items were auctioned, ranging from stamps, coins, and envelopes to albums, first editions, and commemorative stamp collections. Among the standout pieces were thematic books focused on wildlife and purebred Arabian horses, with contributions sourced from various countries worldwide.
Speaking with the Qatar News Agency (QNA), the Center’s Director, Hussein Rajab Al Ismail, remarked that this year’s auction distinguished itself through the diversity of items available and the enthusiastic participation of collectors from the Gulf region and the wider Arab world.
Al Ismail also highlighted the strong demand for Qatari stamps and coins, which garnered significant interest during the event. He further emphasized the Center’s dedication to documenting Qatar’s philatelic history, celebrating the recent publication of its first book detailing the history and characteristics of Qatari stamps. Two more books are in progress, aligning with the Center’s ambitious plan to publish five books annually covering the history, types, and unique features of stamps and currencies.
This year’s auction is part of a larger calendar of 27 events for 2024, including local and international exhibitions. The Center is also collaborating with key state institutions such as the Ministry of Culture, Katara, Qatar Post, and major shopping centers. Al Ismail announced that the Center will soon participate in the Sharjah Stamps and Coins Exhibition, followed by the Shanghai Stamps and Coins Exhibition in China later this month. The Shanghai event will coincide with meetings of the Executive Committee of the Asian Philatelic Federation, where Qatar holds membership.
The Qatar Philatelic and Numismatic Center remains dedicated to nurturing and promoting the hobbies of stamp and coin collecting, fostering their growth, and creating enriching opportunities for enthusiasts to explore these fields.
