Nigerian Police Officers Suspended Over ₦43.16M Theft Scandal

Date:

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) recently disclosed the outcome of a detailed forensic investigation that uncovered a shocking case of theft involving its own officers. These individuals were accused of stealing ₦43.16 million from a total of ₦74.95 million in cash they intercepted under dubious circumstances.

According to the Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, the incident occurred at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on August 26, 2023. It was revealed that the officers acted unprofessionally and unlawfully by arresting an employee of FATFAD Cargo Nigeria Limited, who was legitimately transporting cash on behalf of clients.

What Happened?

The investigation highlighted several disturbing findings:

  • The officers falsely claimed they recovered ₦31.79 million instead of the actual ₦74.95 million.
  • They demanded a percentage of the funds from the owners to suppress the investigation.
  • Photographic evidence was deliberately concealed, with claims that critical data was lost due to a damaged phone.
  • Forensic evidence revealed that the group conspired to steal ₦43.16 million and moved the cash out of the Federal Capital Territory to evade detection.

Officers Found Culpable

The officers involved include:

  • DSP Peter Ejike (Zone 7 Legal Section, Abuja)
  • Inspector Ekende Edwin
  • Inspector Esther Okafor
  • Sergeant Talabi Kayode

These officers have been suspended for misconduct, tampering with evidence, corruption, and abuse of power. They now face prosecution for criminal conspiracy and theft.

Reactions and Next Steps

Force PRO Muyiwa Adejobi dismissed allegations that Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun was shielding the accused officers, emphasizing the NPF’s commitment to transparency and accountability.

Adejobi reiterated that this scandal has not only tarnished the image of the Force but also highlights the need for stricter oversight and professional conduct within law enforcement.

The NPF has assured the public that these officers will face justice, serving as a warning to others who might abuse their positions.

Key Takeaways

This case serves as a critical reminder of the importance of ethics in law enforcement. Greed and corruption not only undermine the trust of citizens but also weaken the integrity of institutions.
