Boost to Kenyan Rugby as M-PESA Announces Ksh. 90M Sponsorship for Shujaa and Lionesses

Date:

Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) has scored a major victory with M-PESA’s announcement of a groundbreaking Ksh. 90 million sponsorship deal. This historic two-year partnership aims to boost the performance of Kenya’s rugby teams—Shujaa and Lionesses—on both local and international stages.

The announcement took place at the RFUEA Grounds in a high-profile event attended by dignitaries, including Sports CS Kipchumba Murkomen, KRU Chairman Sasha Mutai, M-PESA Africa CEO Sitoyo Lopokoiyit, and Safaricom Chief Financial Services Officer Esther Waititu.

A Lifeline for Kenyan Rugby

KRU Chairman Sasha Mutai expressed heartfelt gratitude for the sponsorship, describing it as a game-changer for the sport.

“We are grateful to Safaricom and M-PESA, the biggest brand in East Africa, for their immense support. This sponsorship is a lifeline for our teams as we embark on a journey of exemplary performance. I urge the government and other stakeholders to rally behind our teams,” said Mutai.

Mutai further highlighted the Lionesses’ recent qualification for the 2025 HSBC Series Challenger. He emphasized the need to stay among the top eight teams to avoid relegation and ensure Kenya’s presence on the global rugby map.

Government Support and Accountability

Sports CS Kipchumba Murkomen commended KRU for securing such a reputable sponsor and emphasized the ministry’s commitment to supporting accountable and transparent sports federations.

This partnership marks the historic return of M-PESA and Safaricom to Kenyan rugby. It is a testament to good leadership within the federation. As a ministry, we will continue supporting sports federations that show initiative and accountability, said Murkomen.

Beyond Sponsorship: Building the Rugby Ecosystem

Safaricom’s Chief Financial Services Officer, Esther Waititu, elaborated on the broader vision of the partnership.

Beyond sports, this sponsorship includes financial education, health support, and monthly salaries for players and staff, all facilitated through M-PESA. This is about making a long-term impact at the grassroots level and ensuring Team Kenya dominates as Africa’s rugby giants.

M-PESA Africa CEO Sitoyo Lopokoiyit echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of player welfare and financial stability.

Our goal is to ensure Team Kenya thrives on and off the pitch. Through M-PESA, we’re committed to supporting payment systems, health insurance, and financial education for our rugby teams.

Empowering Kenyan Rugby

The Ksh. 90 million sponsorship marks a new era for Shujaa and Lionesses, with enhanced preparation, performance, and welfare programs. This partnership is set to empower Kenyan rugby to reach new heights, securing its place as a force to be reckoned with in Africa and beyond.
