Electric vehicles (EVs) are still far from dominating Switzerland’s roads, with only 4.1% of registered cars running exclusively on electricity. A recent energy report by Energie Schweiz and Geoimpact highlights significant regional disparities and sheds light on Switzerland’s slow transition to sustainable mobility.
Leading and Lagging Regions
Canton Zug leads the way in EV adoption, with 8.7% of its registered cars being electric. Zurich follows with 5.2%, and Vaud takes third place at 4.3%. On the other end, cantons like Uri (2.8%), Geneva (3.0%), and Neuchâtel (3.0%) trail behind in EV ownership.
Market Trends in New Car Registrations
Although electric cars accounted for nearly 19% of new registrations this year, their market share is slightly lower than the previous year. Hybrid cars remain the most popular choice among new buyers at 33%, followed by petrol cars at 30%.
Challenges in the Transition
Switzerland’s relatively slow adoption of EVs underscores the need for more robust incentives, infrastructure expansion, and awareness campaigns to accelerate the energy transition. While certain regions are making strides, others lag behind, pointing to unequal progress across the country.
As Switzerland works toward its energy transition goals, achieving wider adoption of electric cars will require addressing these regional gaps and providing incentives that make EVs a more viable option for all.
