Swedish company Airbag Inside has produced the world’s first airbag suit, made from the strongest denim called ‘Armalith’. The Mo’cycle airbag jeans contain CO2 cartridges that activate the airbags when a rider falls from their motorcycle. The tether mechanism, which connects the jeans to the motorcycle, creates a puncture in the cartridges that inflates the airbags during a road accident. The jeans are designed to reduce injuries, particularly to the lower body, and are also comfortable and reusable.
Revolutionary safety feature
The Mo’cycle airbag jeans have an invisible airbag that covers the tailbone and spinal column’s first bone, which can become permanently injured in a road accident. The airbag deploys instantly to protect the lower body, including the thighs and coccyx. This innovative safety feature is groundbreaking because spinal column injuries are often the cause of paralysis among motorcycle riders.
Advanced technology meets fashion
Moses Shahrivar, the founder of fashion tech startup Mo’cycle, has been developing protective biker clothing for years. He designed the first prototype, a Kevlar and leather-lined jean, in 2005, but the airbag jeans are made of a single-layer denim fabric and are breathable, available in relaxed or regular fit. The airbag structure is flat, soft, and flexible, so the rider won’t feel it during the ride. The jeans come in different styles, sizes, and colors, with a seamless riding experience in mind.
Crowdfunding campaign and pricing
The Mo’cycle airbag jeans are available for purchase online. The company promises delivery this summer. This product has been tested at speeds of up to 45mph (70kph) with only minimal abrasion to the fabric.
First of all the revolutionary invisible airbag is designed to protect the lower body during road accidents, while the breathable, single-layer denim fabric provides comfort and style. But the Mo’cycle airbag jeans are also a modern fashion-tech product that combines advanced technology with fashion to deliver ‘safety first’.
