Kenya To Unveil 1 Million Locally Made Smartphones In July

Date:

Kenya will launch its first domestically manufactured smartphones within the next two months as the government strives to improve internet-enabled mobile phone usage in the country.

According to ICT Cabinet Secretary (CS) Eliud Owalo, the high cost of the gadgets has been a barrier to digital inclusion.

The devices, which are built in the Konza Technopolis in Malili, Machakos County, will cost Sh5,488 ($40), which is competitive with other major brands such as Samsung.

“We are alive to the question of the affordability of ICT devices as a potential hindrance to the ability of citizens to exploit the full potential that this sector presents,” Owalo said.

“We have been actively engaging diverse stakeholders in the ICT and manufacturing sectors on the prospects of producing low-cost smartphones and lowering data costs,” added the CS.

However, the CS is opposed to disclosing the manufacturer of the smartphones.

In 2013, 14 firms expressed interest in establishing operations in the Konza City project, including Chinese conglomerate Huawei and Safaricom, among others.
