Kenya Partners with Switzerland to Advance Research, Innovation, and Technology

In a significant move to strengthen international cooperation in education and technology, Kenya has partnered with Switzerland to foster advancements in research, innovation, and technology. This partnership is formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the Ministry of Education in Kenya and the Swiss Confederation’s Department of Economic Affairs, Education, and Research.

The MoU was signed by Dr. Belio Kipsang, Principal Secretary for Basic Education, and Martina Hirayama, State Secretary for Education, Research, and Innovation of Switzerland, during a ceremony held at Jogoo House in Nairobi.

  • Exchange Programs: Facilitating opportunities for Kenyan and Swiss lecturers to share knowledge and expertise.
  • Scholarships for Kenyan Students: Providing Kenyan students access to scholarship opportunities to study in Switzerland.
  • Joint Research Initiatives: Encouraging collaborative research projects between Kenyan and Swiss institutions.
  • Research Grants: Allocating funds to support research endeavors that benefit both nations.
  • Knowledge Sharing Programs: Establishing platforms for exchanging insights and innovations in technology and education.

Dr. Belio emphasized that this collaboration represents a significant step toward fostering innovation and growth in education and research for mutual benefit.

Implementation Framework

To ensure the successful execution of the MoU, a technical working committee will be established, comprising representatives from both nations.

Prominent attendees at the signing ceremony included the Swiss Ambassador to Kenya, Mirko Giulietti; Kenya’s Secretary for University Education and Research, Dr. Carol Hunja; Director of Higher Education, Mr. Ogutu; Director of Research, Dr. Roselinda Owuor; and officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the State Department for Higher Education and Research.

This strategic partnership underscores Kenya’s commitment to international collaboration and Switzerland’s dedication to advancing global research and innovation.
