Kenya secures EU funding to build electric bus line in Nairobi

Date:

Kenya has received a $377 million grant from a consortium of European organizations to construct “East Africa’s first electric bus lane.”

According to the agreement, the EU will pay $48.79 million in grants, while the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the French Development Agency (AFD) would collectively support the projects with $255.64 million.

The funds will subsequently be utilized to build an electric bus route connecting Nairobi’s Kenyatta National Hospital to Haile Selassie Avenue in the Central Business District, Racecourse Road to Ring Road Ngara to Juja Road, and ultimately Dandora.

“AFD is very pleased to be part of this Team Europe initiative and to actively contribute to the preparation of this important project for Nairobi and Kenya,” said the Director of the Mobility Department at French Development Agency AFD, Lise Breuil.

The project will not end with the acquisition of buses; it will involve ten major components, ranging from “bus running ways” through stations, depots, and station access supporting infrastructure such as pedestrian bridges and fare collecting and validation systems. As a starting point, a fleet of 110 electric buses will be purchased.
