The Italian Sounding phenomenon represents one of the most serious threats to the Italian economy, with losses estimated in the billions of euros annually. This term indicates the improper use of names, colors, symbols, or concepts that evoke Italy without the product having any Italian origin or connection to our country.
Unlike pure counterfeiting, which reproduces identical brands and products, Italian Sounding insinuates itself through the meshes of ambiguity by using names, colors, symbols, or geography that recall Italy without the product having any Italian origin.
The food sector is the most affected, with products such as American “Parmesan” or “Prosciutto di Parma” produced in Canada invading global markets, exploiting names and traditions that belong exclusively to our country.
The figures for the Italian Sounding phenomenon are as impressive as they are alarming. It is estimated that the value of Italian Sounding exceeds 100 billion euros per year, more than double the value of authentic Italian agri-food exports.
In addition to the direct economic damage, Italian Sounding erodes consumer trust and obscures the image of quality and authenticity that Italy has built over time. A consumer disappointed by an “Italian sounding” product might associate that poor quality with the true “Made in Italy”. For Italian producers, particularly the Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) which represent the backbone of the national economy, Italian Sounding means unfair competition and a significant loss of revenue.
The fight against Italian Sounding requires a multidisciplinary approach that combines legal, technological, and communication aspects. It is essential to strengthen the legal protection of trademarks and designations of origin, improve controls along the entire supply chain, and raise consumer awareness about the importance of authenticity.
Italian Sounding is an insidious enemy that attacks the heart of Italian excellence. Fighting it means defending not only the economy but also the culture and identity of our country.
