Iran Protests UK and EU Sanctions on Shipping Industry, Warns of Retaliation

Date:

Tehran has escalated its diplomatic efforts to counter recent sanctions imposed by the United Kingdom and the European Union, summoning British and Hungarian envoys to convey its firm disapproval.

The sanctions, announced earlier this week, target the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines (IRISL) and several individuals and entities allegedly linked to the supply of drones and missiles to Russia for use in the Ukraine conflict. Iran has categorically denied these allegations, calling them politically motivated and baseless.

Diplomatic Summons in Tehran

In response to the UK’s measures, the Iranian Foreign Ministry summoned the UK chargé d’affaires on Tuesday night. Iranian officials condemned the sanctions as violations of international law, emphasizing their adverse impact on global maritime trade and navigation freedoms.

During the meeting, Iranian diplomats warned of retaliatory measures and stated that such actions undermine Iran’s sovereignty. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi criticized the UK’s “double standards,” highlighting the reported sale of British-made components for F-35 fighter jets to Israel, allegedly used against civilians in Gaza.

Araghchi argued that the Labour government’s reluctance to impose an arms embargo on Israel reflects the prioritization of NATO and U.S. interests over ethical considerations.

Hungary Also Draws Tehran’s Ire

Iran also summoned Hungary’s ambassador, Giola Peto, to address the EU’s sanctions. Hungary, holding the EU’s rotating presidency, was accused of supporting coercive measures against Iran’s shipping industry.

Iranian officials reiterated that the sanctions lacked legal justification, calling them inconsistent with international norms. Ambassador Peto assured Iranian representatives that their concerns would be conveyed to EU leaders in Brussels.

Tehran’s Denial of Allegations

Iran firmly rejects accusations that its shipping and airlines are involved in transporting military supplies to Russia. The government maintains that its international cooperation, including defense-related activities, complies with international law and poses no threat to third parties.

Warning of Retaliation

Tehran has warned the UK and EU that the sanctions will provoke consequences. Iranian officials stated, “Those responsible for these unilateral coercive measures must bear full accountability for their repercussions.”

As tensions escalate, Iran signals its determination to defend its interests and sovereignty, emphasizing that it will not tolerate provocations undermining its international standing.
