Iran’s national football team showcased resilience and determination in a closely contested 3-2 victory over Kyrgyzstan during the Group A match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup AFC Qualifiers. The clash, held at the Dolen Omurzakov Stadium in Bishkek, demonstrated Iran’s class as they edged closer to securing their World Cup spot.

Early Dominance by Iran

The match began with Iran asserting dominance. Mehdi Taremi, renowned for his clinical finishing, put Team Melli ahead in the 13th minute with a deft strike. The visitors doubled their lead in the 33rd minute when Saleh Hardani capitalized on a defensive lapse to slot the ball past the Kyrgyz goalkeeper.

With a comfortable 2-0 lead heading into halftime, Iran appeared to be cruising to a routine victory.

Kyrgyzstan’s Spirited Fightback

Kyrgyzstan returned after the break with renewed energy, igniting the home crowd. In the 51st minute, Joel Kojo narrowed the deficit with a well-placed header. The hosts maintained the momentum and equalized in the 64th minute when Kojo converted a penalty after a defensive error by Iran.

The scoreline at 2-2 created a tense atmosphere, with both teams pushing hard for the winner.

Azmoun Seals the Victory

Iran’s talisman, Sardar Azmoun, stepped up in the 76th minute, delivering a powerful header to reclaim the lead. The decisive goal secured a hard-fought victory for Team Melli, who now stand at the brink of qualification with 16 points.

Group A Standings and Next Matches

Iran’s win keeps them unbeaten in Group A and atop the table. Earlier in the day, Uzbekistan defeated DPR Korea 1-0, securing second place with 13 points.

In the next round of matches scheduled for March, Iran will face the United Arab Emirates, while Kyrgyzstan will take on Uzbekistan in a bid to keep their qualification hopes alive.
