Iran Completes Phase-One of Chabahar LNG Hub to Boost Regional Energy Exports

Date:

Iran’s Ministry of Petroleum has confirmed the crucial phase-one completion of the Chabahar LNG Hub, a strategic energy project designed to fundamentally transform the southeastern port city into a major regional center for liquefied natural gas (LNG) processing and export. The announcement, made on November 29, 2025, follows an official tour of the newly constructed gas-liquefaction units and critical offshore pipeline linkages.

The initial phase includes the commissioning of two highly efficient mini-LNG trains, the completion of a 180 km pipeline connecting the hub to the national gas grid, and the modernization of a dedicated loading terminal capable of handling small and medium LNG carriers. Once this first phase becomes fully operational, the Chabahar hub is expected to provide Iran with strategic benefits: it will significantly diversify the nation’s energy export routes beyond the heavily congested Persian Gulf, dramatically reduce its reliance on the geopolitically sensitive Strait of Hormuz, and substantially boost energy trade with key markets in South Asia and East Africa. The entire Chabahar LNG Hub is strategically designed for seamless integration with existing India-backed infrastructure projects in the region, including the adjacent Chabahar Port, which further strengthens Iran’s geopolitical and economic leverage. Iranian officials project that the full project, upon final completion, will eventually reach an annual capacity of 8 million tonnes per year by 2030, establishing Chabahar as a vital component of the global energy supply chain.
