Iran Eyes Strategic Railway Connection to China via Afghanistan

Date:

In a significant step toward regional connectivity, the Islamic Republic of Iran is pursuing plans to connect its railway network with China via Afghanistan. This ambitious project was discussed during a recent meeting between Jabar-Ali Zakeri, the head of Iran Railways (RAI), and Mohammad Ishaq Sahibzadeh, head of Afghanistan Railways.

Zakeri emphasized the strategic importance of the Iran-Afghanistan-China railway corridor, stating, “Due to the proximity of Iran, Afghanistan, and China, this route can shorten transit routes and significantly reduce costs. Completing the Herat rail route on schedule is critical to realizing this vision.”

Strengthening Iran-Afghanistan Railway Cooperation

Highlighting the mutual benefits, Zakeri pointed out that the railway line in northwest Afghanistan and its proximity to the Iranian border present a tremendous opportunity for transit and trade. “Iran is committed to supporting Afghanistan’s railway development,” he added.

Iran has also extended its expertise to Afghanistan by offering training programs for Afghan railway employees. Over 96 Afghan professionals have already participated in these courses, and plans for a third training program are underway. This collaboration underscores Iran’s role in bolstering Afghanistan’s railway infrastructure.

The Role of the Khaf-Herat Railway in Regional Trade

Sahibzadeh commended the growing collaboration, particularly the training efforts, and expressed hope for enhanced transit and trade through the Khaf-Herat railway. He noted, “The Khaf-Herat railway project symbolizes the enduring friendship between the two nations. Together, we aim to increase transit and promote trade growth.”

Currently, three trains operate weekly on the Iran-Afghanistan route, signaling the resolution of prior operational challenges. Both countries are optimistic that further development of this railway connection will unlock significant economic and logistical opportunities.
