Indian Railways has announced a push for enhanced passenger amenities, with major improvements to be rolled out by late 2025. One key area of focus is thermal comfort, particularly through the ongoing upgrade of its fleet, exemplified by the next-generation Vande Bharat 4.0 trains. These trains feature advanced amenities, including improved coach workmanship, ergonomically designed seating, and enhanced, personalized climate control systems that allow passengers to adjust the temperature to their preference, addressing a long-standing issue in traditional sleeper coaches. This modernization is also being implemented in the Amrit Bharat trains, aiming to set global benchmarks in performance and passenger experience.
The second major initiative is the expansion of on-board digital entertainment, often referred to as Content on Demand (CoD), with the goal of increasing non-fare revenue. This service will provide passengers with preloaded multilingual content, including movies, music videos, news, and general entertainment, accessible via their personal devices (smartphones or laptops) through media servers installed in the coaches. This system, which is being deployed by RailTel in partnership with companies like Zee Entertainment, is planned for thousands of Premium/Express/Mail and Suburban trains. These amenity upgrades are part of Indian Railways’ massive modernization drive to make rail travel more comfortable, efficient, and competitive with air travel. They complement other ongoing projects, such as the redevelopment of over 100 stations under the Amrit Bharat Scheme and the large-scale deployment of the indigenous Kavach automatic train protection system to enhance safety and operational speed across the network
