India is set to receive the fourth squadron of the Russian-made S-400 air defence system by May, sources told India Today TV. The delivery is expected around the first anniversary of Operation Sindoor, during which the system played a key role in countering Pakistani aerial threats.
The fifth and final squadron is likely to be delivered later this year. So far, India has received and operationalised three S-400 squadrons.
In 2018, India signed a deal worth approximately Rs 35,000 crore with Russia for five S-400 squadrons. These advanced air defence systems are central to strengthening India’s layered air defence network and protecting critical strategic assets.
STRATEGIC DEPLOYMENT ACROSS KEY REGIONS
The S-400 systems have been deployed across crucial locations to bolster India’s defence preparedness.
One squadron has been positioned to secure the Siliguri Corridor, a narrow and vital link connecting the Northeast with the rest of the country. Another has been deployed in the Pathankot region to reinforce air defence over Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab, guarding against potential threats from both China and Pakistan.
The third squadron has been deployed along India’s western frontier, covering key areas in Rajasthan and Gujarat. These systems proved crucial during Operation Sindoor, when India effectively countered incoming Pakistani missiles alongside indigenous air defence platforms.
Following heightened tensions with China in Ladakh in 2020, India has accelerated efforts to enhance its air defence capabilities.
S-400: A POWERFUL SHIELD
Designed to intercept fighter jets, ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and even drones, the S-400 is among the most potent air defence systems in India’s arsenal.
The system can detect aerial threats at distances of up to 600 km and engage targets at ranges of up to 400 km using four different types of missiles.
Each S-400 squadron comprises 16 vehicles, including missile launchers, advanced radar systems, command-and-control units and support vehicles.
