India: Heavy Rain to Lash Multiple States This Week as IMD Flags Flood Threat and Thunderstorms; What Travellers Need to Know

Date:

A heavy monsoon spell is expected to impact several eastern and northeastern states of India through July 18, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The forecast also warns of thunderstorms, gusty winds, and the possibility of flash floods in parts of the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal, prompting authorities and residents to remain alert.

According to the latest All India Weather Summary and Forecast Bulletin issued by the IMD, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over Assam, Meghalaya, Bihar, Gangetic West Bengal, Uttarakhand, and other Himalayan regions during the week. Travelers are advised to monitor local weather updates, avoid flood-prone areas, and prepare for possible disruptions to road, rail, and air travel.

On July 13, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places across Assam, Meghalaya, Bihar, and Gangetic West Bengal. Heavy rainfall is also expected over Arunachal Pradesh, East Uttar Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Odisha, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, and Uttarakhand, raising concerns over waterlogging, landslides, and localized flooding.

The IMD further stated that the current monsoon phase is likely to remain active throughout the week. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected to continue over Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, East Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Uttarakhand, and several northeastern states between July 14 and July 15. From July 16 onward, intensified monsoon activity is expected to influence Uttarakhand, West Bengal & Sikkim, Assam & Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, and other northeastern regions, with authorities urging residents and travellers to stay updated on weather advisories.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast moderate to widespread rainfall over Uttarakhand until July 18. Widespread showers are also expected across Himachal Pradesh between July 17 and 18, while Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, and adjoining regions are likely to witness scattered rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds of 40–60 km/h.

For eastern India, heavy rainfall is expected over Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, and West Bengal throughout the week. The IMD has issued a warning for isolated spells of very heavy rainfall in Bihar and Gangetic West Bengal on July 13, with the possibility of waterlogging and localized flooding in vulnerable areas.

In central India, scattered rainfall is likely over Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Vidarbha, while isolated heavy showers are forecast in Chhattisgarh through July 15. Meanwhile, western India is expected to receive widespread monsoon rains across Gujarat, Saurashtra & Kutch, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, Konkan, and Goa, with rainfall activity continuing in Konkan and Goa until July 15.

Across southern India, scattered rainfall is forecast over Karnataka, Kerala, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Rayalaseema. Despite ongoing monsoon conditions, the IMD has issued heatwave warnings for isolated parts of Coastal Andhra Pradesh on July 13 and 14, while Odisha and Coastal Tamil Nadu are expected to experience hot and humid weather.

The weather agency has also warned of thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds across Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Telangana, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya, Chhattisgarh, and Uttarakhand. Wind speeds could reach 60 km/h in parts of Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, while strong surface winds are also expected over Telangana and parts of Andhra Pradesh.
