India: Bill Gates meets Chandrababu Naidu in Andhra; AI, governance to focus in talks

Date:

Microsoft founder Bill Gates arrived in Andhra Pradesh on Monday for a series of meetings with Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and senior officials, aimed at exploring opportunities to expand cooperation between the Gates Foundation and the state government. The discussions are expected to focus on key sectors, including health, agriculture, education, and technology-enabled governance.

The Chief Minister welcomed Gates at the Secretariat, along with Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, IT Minister Nara Lokesh, and other cabinet colleagues, marking the start of a day-long agenda focused on building strategic partnerships in the state.

After receiving Gates at the airport, Lokesh wrote that the state looks forward to working closely with the Gates Foundation to create scalable and impactful solutions for public welfare.

Chief Minister Naidu has requested Gates to increase the Foundation’s involvement in the health sector, specifically seeking support to expand ongoing interventions in Chittoor district. Projects in the region have focused on improving health outcomes, and the current discussions aim to extend similar benefits to a wider population across Andhra Pradesh.

According to government sources, the schedule included a presentation by Naidu on the Real-Time Governance System (RTGS), which uses digital tools to monitor public service delivery in real time. Gates will also be briefed on how data-driven governance is implemented in Andhra Pradesh, followed by a demonstration of the Sanjeevani health record digitisation programme being developed in collaboration with the Gates Foundation.

During the RTGS visit, discussions will be held on leveraging technology and artificial intelligence to improve public sector efficiency and transparency. The state’s “Swarna Andhra 2047” vision will also be presented, outlining proposed reforms in healthcare, agriculture, med-tech, diagnostic services, and education, aimed at long-term transformation, according to officials.

After the Secretariat engagements, Gates and his team are scheduled to visit an agricultural farm in Amaravati, where they will witness the use of drones and AI in farming, highlighting scalable innovations that could be expanded with the Foundation’s support.

Municipal Minister P Narayana said the visit followed an invitation extended by Naidu to further deepen collaboration with the state government, emphasising the ongoing dialogue between the two sides and the intention to strengthen cooperation through this engagement.

This is Gates’s third visit to Andhra Pradesh, having previously visited the erstwhile undivided state twice. The current trip underscores a renewed commitment to collaborative projects that could bring lasting public welfare benefits across the state.
