Cameroon Approves Groundbreaking Inclusive Education Policy

Date:

Cameroon has taken a significant step toward promoting equality in education by adopting a landmark national policy focused on delivering quality and equitable inclusive education for people with disabilities. This progressive move aims to ensure access to education for at least 25% of people with disabilities by 2028, marking a transformative shift in the country’s educational landscape.

A Collaborative Effort

The policy’s development was spearheaded with critical support from Sightsavers, an international organization committed to social inclusion and disability rights. In collaboration with Sightsavers Ireland and Irish Aid, Cameroon has already made remarkable progress, increasing the number of inclusive schools from just five in 2012 to an impressive 720 by 2023. This achievement reflects the dedication of both the government and its partners to fostering an inclusive learning environment.

The policy focuses on several key areas:

  • Improving access to education and training institutions for people with disabilities.
  • Involving people with disabilities in teacher training and evaluation.
  • Strengthening educational governance through strategic partnerships.

Government Commitment to Inclusive Education

The government of Cameroon reinforced its commitment at a ceremony attended by high-ranking officials, disability organizations, and international partners like Plan International and the World Bank. The event, chaired by Minister of Basic Education Professor Laurent Serge Etoundi Ngoa and Minister of Secondary Education Professor Pauline Nalova Lyonga, highlighted the collaborative nature of this initiative.

A Vision for the Future

By 2028, Cameroon aims to transform 1,200 educational institutions, train 8,000 teachers, and provide direct support to over 22,000 students with disabilities. This ambitious vision not only addresses the immediate need for inclusion but also sets the foundation for a more equitable education system that benefits all learners.

The policy is more than just a statement of intent; it represents a significant stride toward fostering an inclusive society where every individual, regardless of ability, has the opportunity to thrive.

The Road Ahead

This milestone in Cameroon’s education sector demonstrates what can be achieved through collaboration and commitment. As these initiatives unfold, they will serve as a model for other countries seeking to create more inclusive learning environments.
