Idris Elba calls for peaceful election in Sierra Leone

Date:

Renowned British actor Idris Elba, who proudly holds both British and Sierra Leonean citizenship, has passionately appealed for a peaceful general election in Sierra Leone, scheduled to take place this Saturday.

In a heartfelt message delivered in pidgin English, Elba emphasized the importance of a peaceful election process. “This election, please let it be peaceful,” he implored.

Addressing the younger generation, Elba reminded them of their immense power in shaping the future through their votes. He cautioned that if violence were to mar the electoral process, it would be the Sierra Leonean people themselves who would have to bear the burden of rebuilding their beloved nation.

Elba highlighted that the world’s attention, not only from international observers but also from the entire African continent, is fixed upon Sierra Leone. He underscored the significance of upholding peace and unity during this crucial period.

The upcoming vote on Saturday will mark Sierra Leone’s sixth presidential election since the military takeover in 1992. Incumbent President Julius Maada Bio of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) will face off against Dr. Samura Kamara of the All People’s Congress (APC).

However, the lead-up to the election has been marred by the arrest of several influential opposition figures, raising concerns over the fairness and transparency of the electoral process.

Coinciding with Elba’s plea, the Commonwealth Observer Group in Sierra Leone, headed by former Nigerian Vice-President Professor Yemi Osinbajo, also stressed the significance of a peaceful election.

Professor Osinbajo, representing more than 2.5 billion people across the Commonwealth, of which over 60% are young individuals under the age of 30, emphasized the collective hopes and aspirations resting on Sierra Leone. He called for a democratic process that genuinely reflects the will of the people.

As the world eagerly awaits the outcome of Saturday’s vote, the international community remains committed to supporting Sierra Leone in its pursuit of a peaceful, fair, and transparent election, one that will shape the future of the nation for years to come.
