The 24th edition of the Great Ethiopian Run International 10K, held in Addis Ababa on November 17, 2024, once again demonstrated the city’s unique charm and Ethiopia’s vibrant spirit. With over 50,000 participants from around the globe, the event was more than a race—it was a celebration of community, culture, and development.
Held under the theme “For Every Child, Nutrition,” the race brought together professional athletes, international visitors, and everyday enthusiasts, all united in promoting a meaningful cause.
An Unforgettable Experience for Foreign Participants
Conor Twomey from the USA, participating for the first time, was captivated by the grandeur of the event and Ethiopia’s scenic beauty. “What a beautiful country, what a beautiful city!” Twomey exclaimed, adding that his experience running amidst the eucalyptus trees of Entoto Natural Park was an unparalleled pleasure.
Twomey also praised Addis Ababa’s ongoing infrastructure improvements:
“It’s really impressive to see how every single street is being renovated. The investment, the sense of hope—it’s incredible to witness.”
Liam O’Brien from Ireland, an experienced marathoner, shared his awe at the scale and energy of the event. Despite having participated in prestigious races like the New York, Berlin, and Chicago marathons, O’Brien found the Great Ethiopian Run to be a unique and fun-filled experience. “The atmosphere was incredible, and seeing children and young people join in was truly heartwarming,” he said.
Stephen Farshing, participating for the third time, remarked on the unity and joy the race inspires. “It’s so nice to see everyone coming together, running, and encouraging each other. It’s a true spirit of brotherhood,” he reflected.
A Symbol of Ethiopia’s Growth and Culture
Founded by legendary long-distance runner Haile Gebrselassie in 2000, the Great Ethiopian Run has grown into one of Africa’s largest road races. This year’s event also marked the 50th anniversary of the discovery of Lucy, the 3.2-million-year-old hominid fossil that underscores Ethiopia’s role as the cradle of humanity.
Beyond the race itself, Addis Ababa’s rapid development and corridor expansions provided a fitting backdrop to an event that exemplifies progress, unity, and pride in Ethiopian culture.
As the race concluded, participants and spectators alike left with lasting memories of an event that blends sportsmanship with a celebration of Ethiopia’s history and hospitality.
