Giorgia Meloni Retains South Portfolio Amid Cabinet Changes

Date:

Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni has introduced changes within her government while reinforcing her commitment to the development of Italy’s southern regions. On Tuesday, Meloni reassigned the portfolios for European affairs, territorial cohesion, and the implementation of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) to Tommaso Foti. These responsibilities were previously held by Raffaele Fitto, who has transitioned to the role of Vice President of the European Commission.

However, Meloni has chosen to retain the portfolio for the South herself, signaling her dedication to fostering growth and progress in the region.

Focus on the South: A Key Priority

Meloni has initiated a “reconnaissance” operation within the government to assess the progress made in strengthening the South. This effort includes reviewing the programs currently underway, incentives already in place, and proposals for infrastructure and investment projects yet to be implemented.

In her recent remarks, Meloni emphasized the significant contributions of the South to Italy’s economy. She noted that in 2023, the region acted as a “locomotive of Italy,” achieving GDP and employment growth above the national average and making a strong impact on exports.

Looking Ahead: A Vision for Sustained Growth

Premier Meloni has expressed her intent to “proceed along this path with even greater determination,” highlighting her focus on driving infrastructure development, investment attraction, and regional incentives to ensure sustained economic progress in the South.

By retaining direct control over the South portfolio, Meloni demonstrates her commitment to leveraging the region’s potential as a cornerstone of Italy’s national growth strategy.
