Ghana’s University of Education, Winneba is promoting innovative pedagogy for teachers

Date:

University of Education, Winneba (UEW) is proud to be an enabler of innovative pedagogy for Ghana’s teachers, said Prof. Mawutor Avoke, the Vice Chancellor of the institution. In his address at a matriculation ceremony for fresh students at its College for Distance Education and e-learning (CODel) for the 2022/2023 academic year, Prof. Avoke emphasized the importance of education as the most effective means of fostering socio-economic transformation.

UEW Promotes Digital Literacy

Prof. Avoke highlighted the need for students to obtain the necessary digital tools to tap into technology and digitalization. He encouraged students to work hard to attain laurels for themselves and the university. In today’s high-tech world, literacy also encompasses media and digital literacy abilities, he said.

UEW Continues to Expand

UEW continues to advance its activities to provide top-notch education aimed at redirecting Ghana’s efforts at rapid economic and social development, as well as to make its results fully responsive to the realities and exigencies of contemporary Ghana and West African sub-region. To provide flexible learning spaces for students in the country, UEW has opened two new study centers at Dormaa Ahenkro Senior High School and Kofi Adjei Senior High School at Fawoade. This brings to 44 the total number of centers offering quality education across the country.

UEW was pleased to matriculate the first batch of students numbering 84 from Dormaa Ahenkro and 26 from Kofi Adjei study centers, who have been enrolled in the undergraduate distance education programs at the new centers. Plans are underway to create study centers at the College of Languages Education at Ajumako and in the newly created regions in the country to bring quality education to the doorsteps of students in those areas.

UEW has introduced new programs for the next academic year, including Master of Education in Basic Education, Master of Education in Early Grade and MBA distance learning programs. When the new programs are introduced, it will provide an opportunity for graduates in the Basic and Early Child Education who were willing to pursue further education but could not do so due to distance and other factors.

Admission and Registration

UEW received a total of 12,657 applications and admitted 11,689. At the close of registration, 8,745 applicants registered for various diploma, post-graduate, first-degree, and postgraduate programs. The students who registered were made up of 5,204 males representing 59 percent and 3,541 females representing 40.5 percent.
576 students representing 6.6 percent registered for diploma programs, 4,061 for post-diploma programs representing 46.4 percent, 3,253 for first-degree programs representing 37.2 percent and 855 students representing 9.8 percent for post-postgraduate programs.

The University of Education, Winneba continues to make strides in providing top-notch education to students in Ghana and the West African sub-region. The emphasis on digital tools and innovative pedagogy reflects the changes in education in the 21st century. With the opening of new study centers and the introduction of new programs, the university is committed to making education more accessible and flexible for students.
