A significant milestone has been achieved in Ghana’s academic landscape as Professor Mariam El-Boakye Gyasi becomes the country’s first female Associate Professor of Pharmaceutics. This achievement marks a major step forward for gender equality in academia. Breaking Gender Barriers in Academia
Prof. Mariam El-Boakye Gyasi, currently a Senior Lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has made history with her remarkable accomplishment. She is part of the faculty in the Department of Pharmaceutics at the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, where she imparts her knowledge of Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Technology to both undergraduate and graduate students. In addition to her teaching responsibilities, she also serves as the postgraduate seminars and research coordinator for her department and as the deputy examinations officer.
Prof. Boakye-Gyasi’s expertise in pharmaceutics and pharmaceutical technology covers a wide range of areas, including nanotechnology, natural polymers, local excipient use in medication formulation, and quality control of pharmaceutical products. Her pioneering work in these fields has garnered recognition. She is a Fellow of the University of Michigan African Presidential Scholars Program, further demonstrating her commitment to advancing pharmaceutical research.
An Inspiration for Women in Science
Prof. Mariam El-Boakye Gyasi’s promotion as an Associate Professor is not only a significant achievement for the academic community but also a source of inspiration for women pursuing careers in science. Her success highlights the importance of representation and the potential for women to excel in traditionally male-dominated fields. She obtained her bachelor’s degree in pharmacy, as well as her MPhil and PhD in pharmaceutics, from KNUST. She is an active member of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana and holds a pharmacy license.
Prof. Boakye-Gyasi’s dedication to her field extends beyond her teaching and research roles. She holds the position of Academic Capacity Lead for the FIP-UNESCO UNITWIN Center for Excellence in Africa and is a member of FIP-WISE, further contributing to the advancement of pharmaceutical education and research.
