Kensington Palace is set to host its biggest exhibition ever, entitled ‘Crown to Couture,’ from April 5 to October 29. The exhibition aims to compare modern-day red carpet fashion with the fashion of the Georgian court in the 18th century.
The Exhibition:
The exhibition will feature over 200 objects, showcasing the evolution of fashion and design over time. Historic Royal Palaces, the charity responsible for Kensington Palace, has partnered with renowned fashion houses and designers to present iconic red carpet looks from recent years, worn by celebrities such as Lady Gaga and Lizzo. The exhibition will demonstrate the similarities between contemporary fashion and the fashion “rules” set out by high society designers in the Georgian era.
The exhibition will showcase the stunning designs of the Georgian era, from the distinctive mantua to the intricately embroidered court suit. One of the pieces on display is the Rockingham Mantua, brocaded in silver thread and silver lace trim, which is synonymous with the era. Other items include fans, dress swords, hats, jewelry, shoes, stockings, stays, and even a wig curler. The world-famous Silver Tissue Gown, a rare example of fashion worn at the court of Charles II, will also be on display.
The Curators:
The exhibition is curated by Claudia Acott Williams and Polly Putnam of Historic Royal Palaces, who hope to provide visitors with a new perspective on the historic spaces of Kensington Palace. The exhibition will allow visitors to experience the Palace as it was meant to be experienced, filled to the brim with the most fashionable and influential names of the day. Production designer Joseph Bennett, best known for his work on Alexander McQueen’s famous catwalk shows, has been tasked with creating the exhibition.
The ‘Crown to Couture’ exhibition at Kensington Palace offers a captivating journey through time that is sure to delight fashion enthusiasts and history buffs alike.
