From Miniature to Realism: Delhi Exhibition Traces Indian Art’s Growth

Date:

The Surrendra Paul Art Gallery in Delhi is currently hosting an exhibition showcasing the evolution of Indian art through the work of anonymous artists from Bengal in the 19th and 20th centuries. The exhibition features a variety of media, from finely detailed miniature paintings to the fusion of realism and mythology. The exhibition runs until March 12.

European Influence on Indian Art

During the 19th century, European artists were commissioned to work for wealthy Europeans settling in India, as well as zamindars, which led to the introduction of oil on canvas and the style of Western realism to India. This new style eventually opened doors for art to flourish in India. Indian artists had to adapt to the new form due to a rise in demand for portraits and realistic paintings, which eventually led to the portrayal of mythology in flesh and blood.

Glimpse of Indian Art Evolution

The anonymous paintings on display provide a glimpse into how Indian art has evolved over different eras. According to Vasundhara Tiwari Broota, a painter, the portrayal of mythology in realistic form brought the general masses closer to the notion of the cosmic. The exhibition fills gaps in mapping India’s art evolution and provides perspective on the influence of external factors.

The exhibition will give art enthusiasts ample time to explore and understand the evolution of Indian art through the ages. This exhibition highlights the influence of the West on Indian art and how Indian artists adapted and developed new styles to meet changing demands. The portrayal of mythology in realistic form, in particular, demonstrates how Indian art was able to merge the spiritual and the material worlds. The Surrendra Paul Art Gallery’s exhibition is a must-see for those interested in the history of Indian art and how it has developed over time.
