When Football Chants in Doha Resonate for Palestine

Date:

A Football Journey Rooted in Resilience

Amidst a sea of Palestinian flags and keffiyehs, 14-year-old Ahmed reflects on a transformative experience. Once a casual Real Madrid fan, Ahmed’s passion for football shifted when he learned that Doha would host Palestine’s World Cup Qualifiers match against Kuwait in October 2023.

“I’m here to meet people from my country,” Ahmed said during the game, where the Palestine team launched a counterattack that ignited a roar from the crowd. Hailing from the northern Gaza Strip, Ahmed considers himself fortunate to have escaped. After months of displacement to Egypt following the October 7 Israeli onslaught, Ahmed now finds solace in Doha.

With a Real Madrid jersey peeking out beneath his keffiyeh, Ahmed proudly translates chants like, “With our soul, with our blood, we will redeem you, Palestine!” These chants, he says, remind him of home. Ahmed is one of nearly 2,000 Palestinians who attended the match, seeking both a sense of community and a way to support their homeland.

A Stadium of Solidarity and Identity

“Our people are the source of our strength,” declared Musab Al-Battat, Palestine’s midfielder, ahead of the clash against Kuwait.

The match, held at Doha’s Jassim bin Hamad Stadium, was another “home” game for Palestine, whose players have faced logistical challenges due to Israeli-imposed restrictions. For Al-Battat, these matches serve as a tribute to those enduring hardship in Gaza.

“This is the least we can do for everyone suffering back in Gaza,” he said. “We hope to bring them joy with our wins.”

From the opening whistle, the Palestinian players exhibited unwavering determination, inspiring a crowd whose chants and drumming began long before the match.

A young boy perched on his father’s shoulders led the chant “Free Free Palestine!” The boy’s father, Omar, explained, “Attending these matches is one way to connect my son with his Palestinian heritage.” As the stadium came alive with chants, drumbeats, and keffiyehs proudly draped, Omar hoped these moments would leave a lasting impression on his son.

Fueling the Fight Through Football

Palestine’s spirited performance resulted in a dramatic 2-2 draw against Kuwait, achieved despite being down to 10 men for over 35 minutes.

“Falasteen! Falasteen! Falasteen!” echoed through the stadium as fans celebrated the team’s resilience. The match brought to mind Palestine’s remarkable ability to hold South Korea to consecutive draws—a feat unmatched by any other team in the qualifiers.

When asked what drives the Fida’i’s tenacity, head coach Makram Daboub responded, “Their love for their people. They compete for their people and for the chance to raise the Palestinian flag at the World Cup.
