An Iranian sports commentator has publicly criticized FIFA for not expelling Israel from the World Cup, citing the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The prominent commentator, Javad Khiyabani, expressed dismay at FIFA’s decision to allow Israel’s participation while banning Russia, questioning what he sees as blatant double standards.
Khiyabani condemned the inclusion of Israel, accusing it of committing genocide against Palestinians, leading to the deaths of nearly 50,000 innocent civilians. In contrast, Russia was excluded from the tournament due to political controversies.
The commentator revealed plans to start a petition titled, “Why is Russia out of the World Cup but Israel is in?” He intends to gather public support and present the petition to FIFA President Gianni Infantino, demanding accountability for the organization’s decisions.
Khiyabani further called FIFA’s stance a “disgrace” and demanded an explanation for what he perceives as inconsistent policies regarding the participation of nations in international sports based on their political and humanitarian records.
This criticism adds to growing global calls for the exclusion of Israel from international sporting events, fueled by its controversial political and human rights track record.
