Explore New York City’s Tree Population with Interactive Map

Date:

In New York City, an interactive map is currently available, that provides a comprehensive and up-to-date view of its tree population. The map replaces the city’s previous street tree map and contains data on more than 860,000 park and street trees, making it the most comprehensive and up-to-date map of living trees in the world. The map enables users to explore the city’s tree population, learn about their benefits, and track their care.

Tree Map Features

The New York City Tree Map represents trees with circles, with each circle’s size and color corresponding to the tree’s diameter and species. Users can collect data on an entire tree species in a particular neighborhood or on each individual tree on the map. They can also learn about each tree’s contribution to stormwater management, energy conservation, or pollutant filtration.

In addition, the map allows users to record their favorite trees through a feature such as “My Trees.” Users can also keep track of any actions they have taken to care for their trees through the “Record Your Care” button. This feature enables users to enter the date, duration, and type of care activity they participated in.

Environmental Benefits of Trees in New York City

The database estimates that New York City’s 860,000 trees provide nearly $130 million in environmental benefits to the city each year. Trees in the Lower East Side alone absorb more than 5.8 million gallons of stormwater annually, saving the city nearly $58,000. They also save nearly 3,600,000 kWh of energy, which saves the city more than $450,000.

Furthermore, the trees remove more than 1.5 million pounds of air pollutants and more than 1.5 million tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere each year. The database’s findings demonstrate the importance of trees to the city’s well-being and emphasize the need to protect them.

Efforts to Increase the City’s Tree Population

The interactive map is part of a series of developments aimed at increasing New York City’s tree population. In February 2022, five city council chapters banded together to demand that the city plant one million new trees by 2030. The demand comes amid growing concerns about climate change and environmental degradation, which highlight the critical role that trees play in promoting sustainability.

The New York City Tree Map provides residents with a unique opportunity to explore the city’s tree population, learn about their benefits, and take steps to care for them. With nearly one million trees in the city, they play a vital role in improving the environment, enhancing public health, and supporting a sustainable future. Through continued efforts to increase the city’s tree population, New York can ensure that its residents can continue to enjoy the many benefits of trees for generations to come.
