Explore African Heritage: Sankofa Children’s Museum Reopens

Date:

The Sankofa Children’s Museum of African Cultures, located in Park Heights, has recently celebrated its grand reopening, inviting visitors to embark on a journey of learning and discovery. Established by Esther Armstrong, also known as Mama Kiki, the museum aims to instill a sense of pride and understanding of African history and cultures, particularly among children.

Reconnecting Communities Through Art, Storytelling, and Education

The museum, which initially opened its doors in February 2020, faced temporary closure due to the pandemic. Determined to stay active and engaged, the museum hosted virtual and small-scale events to continue reaching out to the community. Now, with the reopening, visitors can once again immerse themselves in the rich heritage showcased at the museum. The Sankofa bird, symbolizing progress while honoring the past, is one such example.

The museum’s “Culturetorium” offers interactive experiences for visitors. Children can engage in putting together a huge puzzle of Africa, featuring its 54 countries with red, blue, yellow, and green pieces. They can also explore the unique language of the Ashanti people from Ghana by selecting Adinkra symbols and stamping them onto paper.

Esther Armstrong believes that fostering connections and bridges between different cultures, particularly with children, promotes understanding and impartiality. By expanding their knowledge about other cultures, children become more accepting and appreciative of differences in language, and more.

A Journey Through Art

The museum features the Great Hall, displaying a wide array of artwork categorized by the five African regions: Western, Northern, Eastern, Southern, and Central. Armstrong’s husband, Jim Clemmer, an expert in African artwork, has conducted extensive research to provide visitors with a rich understanding of the pieces. The intricate craftsmanship displayed in these artworks highlights the self-sufficiency and creativity of African civilizations before European influence.

Armstrong aims to instill a sense of pride in visitors regarding their African ancestry. She highlights the significant contributions made by Black people throughout history and encourages visitors to embrace their cultural heritage.

The Sankofa Children’s Museum of African Cultures strives to fulfill its vital mission of educating and inspiring the African American community and beyond. Through its unique exhibits, interactive activities, and engaging tours, the museum aims to foster a deep appreciation for African cultures and history, ultimately bridging gaps and promoting understanding among diverse communities.
