Ethiopia continues to make significant strides in enhancing its digital economy, and much of this progress is being supported by the European Union (EU). Recently, Belete Molla, Ethiopia’s Minister of Innovation and Technology, commended the EU’s effective assistance in strengthening the country’s digital transformation during a meeting with Sofie From-Emmesberger, the EU Ambassador-Designate to Ethiopia.
The focus of the meeting was on collaborative efforts to support Ethiopia’s burgeoning digital economy, with particular emphasis on the ongoing initiatives under Digital Ethiopia. The Ministry of Innovation and Technology is actively working to expand the country’s digital infrastructure, and the EU has been instrumental in these efforts.
Ethiopia’s Digital Transformation
Minister Belete highlighted Ethiopia’s Five Million Ethiopian Coders Initiative, a key program aimed at developing a skilled workforce proficient in digital skills to drive the country’s digital economy. The initiative is designed to empower youth by providing them with the necessary training to participate in the digital sector, generate employment opportunities, and contribute to Ethiopia’s economic growth.
Belete acknowledged the EU’s consistent support in these efforts, emphasizing the importance of cultivating digital talent, which is essential to building a sustainable digital economy in Ethiopia. The initiative is not only about acquiring technical skills but also about creating an ecosystem where digital technologies can thrive, fostering innovation and business development in the country.
EU’s Contribution to Ethiopia’s Digital Economy
Ambassador-Designate Sofie From-Emmesberger noted the significant transformation of Ethiopia’s digital economy. The EU has been a strong advocate for the development of E-services, such as digital payment systems, digital business registration, and online licensing, all of which are crucial to building a robust digital infrastructure in Ethiopia.
Looking forward, Ambassador From-Emmesberger expressed her commitment to further collaboration between the EU and Ethiopia, focusing on addressing the key issues that will propel the country’s digital economy to the next level. These efforts will ensure that Ethiopia continues to build a secure, efficient, and inclusive digital economy that can compete globally.
