Ethiopia Looks at Boosting Citizens’ Social Protection Systems

Date:

On May 23, 2023, a two-day high-level national social protection conference with the topic “Social Protection for Nation Building in Ethiopia” got underway.

Demeke Mekonnen, deputy prime minister and minister of foreign affairs, stated that the government is dedicated to cooperating closely with partners to maintain social protection systems for vulnerable individuals in conflict- and drought-affected areas.

A nation’s social protection programmes, among other things, assist people and families, especially the weak and disadvantaged, deal with crises and increase human capital. Additionally, it helps individuals find work, makes investments in children’s health and education, and safeguards the elderly in communities.

The impact of the two-year war that began in November 2020 between Ethiopia and the Tigray region, is still being felt in the country, after the signing of a peace deal in South Africa in November 2022.

World Bank representative Ousmane Dione said that the implementation of social protection programmes in Ethiopia “plays a vital role to sustaining peace and stability as well as consolidating national unity”.
