Ethiopia’s Bid to Host the 2029 Africa Cup of Nations: CAF’s Consideration

Date:

Introduction
Ethiopia’s bid to host the 2029 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) has garnered significant attention following the 46th General Assembly of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), held in Addis Ababa. During the assembly, CAF President Patrice Motsepe announced that Ethiopia’s proposal would be considered through the organization’s procedural process. This marks a pivotal moment in Ethiopia’s pursuit of hosting this prestigious continental football tournament.

Ethiopia’s Bid to Host AFCON 2029

The bid to host the 2029 Africa Cup of Nations was officially presented by Ethiopia’s President, Taye AtskeSelassie, at the CAF General Assembly on October 22, 2024, at the Sky Light Hotel in Addis Ababa. The bid aims to bring the much-anticipated tournament to Ethiopia, leveraging the country’s rich football culture and legacy in African unity.

At the assembly, various reports were presented, including updates on CAF’s financial status and activities, discussions on governance, and sportsmanship initiatives. President Motsepe also emphasized the need for African nations to improve their infrastructure to meet the standards required to host CAF and FIFA tournaments, which has been a significant factor in the discussions surrounding Ethiopia’s bid.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s Support

FIFA President Gianni Infantino voiced his support for Ethiopia’s bid, highlighting the country’s pivotal role in African unity. Infantino noted that Ethiopia has historically been the home of African solidarity, stating, “When I come to Ethiopia, I feel like I am in the African home.” His remarks underscored Ethiopia’s deep-rooted connection to the continent and its contributions to African football and unity.

Despite the support, there are challenges to overcome. Ethiopia, like many other African countries, faces the task of upgrading its stadium infrastructure to meet the minimum standards required for hosting major international tournaments. These requirements were highlighted during previous communications from CAF to Ethiopia, which indicated that the country’s stadiums did not yet meet CAF and FIFA standards for international competitions.

Political and Public Support for Ethiopia’s Bid

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and other Ethiopian football leaders have actively advocated for the bid, demonstrating the country’s determination to host the 2029 Africa Cup of Nations. During the assembly, President Taye AtskeSelassie appealed directly to CAF to approve the bid, and Prime Minister Abiy’s call for Ethiopia to be granted the hosting rights was strongly supported.

In addition, numerous African football legends, including Samuel Eto’o (Cameroon), Jay-Jay Okocha (Nigeria), El Hadji Diouf (Senegal), and Kalusha Bwalya (Zambia), have lent their voices to Ethiopia’s cause. These football icons not only expressed their backing for Ethiopia’s bid but also showed their enthusiasm for the opportunity to see the tournament hosted in the East African nation.

The Road Ahead for Ethiopia

As the CAF General Assembly concluded, President Patrice Motsepe confirmed that Ethiopia’s bid would undergo thorough evaluation according to CAF’s procedural framework. Motsepe acknowledged the country’s strong football passion and the Ethiopian government’s commitment to building new stadiums and sports infrastructure.

The process is ongoing, and as Ethiopia moves forward, the country’s legacy in African football may very well secure its place as the host of the 2029 Africa Cup of Nations.

In a demonstration of solidarity, Ethiopian and African football legends joined CAF officials for a friendly match on October 23, 2024, at Addis Ababa’s stadium, underscoring the enthusiasm surrounding Ethiopia’s potential to host the tournament.
