Ethiopia and Mozambique have formalized and deepened their bilateral relationship by signing a new Defense Cooperation Agreement, aiming to enhance security and stability across their respective regions. The agreement establishes a structured framework for expanded collaboration, specifically focusing on regional peacekeeping coordination, joint training exercises, and enhanced intelligence-sharing.
This development is particularly strategic for both nations, as Ethiopia seeks to bolster security in the Horn of Africa and leverage its diplomatic role as a key member of the African Union Peace and Security Council (AUPSC), while Mozambique works to counter the violent insurgency in its northern Cabo Delgado province. The new deal reinforces the principle of African self-reliance in addressing continental security challenges. Previous cooperation has focused on broad development, but this new agreement formalizes security ties, including counter-terrorism support, marking a significant step toward a more integrated defense posture in East and Southern Africa. Mozambique has been actively seeking to strengthen its criminal justice and military responses to terrorism, making Ethiopia a valuable partner for technical expertise and joint capacity building
