Emirati Heroes Honored at Wahat Al Karama on Commemoration Day

The UAE paid heartfelt tribute to its fallen heroes during a moving ceremony at Wahat Al Karama in Abu Dhabi on November 30, 2024. The Commemoration Day event, led by Sheikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, Ruler of Ajman, honored the sacrifices of the UAE armed forces and other national heroes who gave their lives in service to the country.

Honoring Sacrifices

At the ceremony, 18 families of UAE armed forces members were awarded the Martyr Medal in recognition of their bravery and noble sacrifices. The event featured a poignant gun salute and an aerial display by fighter jets, creating a solemn yet powerful atmosphere.

Among the honored was Nasser Marwan Ali Shehhi, who recalled the loss of his brother, Khalid Al Shehi, in 2015. Similarly, Halima Al Blooshi, whose husband, Sameer Al Blooshi, was martyred in 2017, shared her pride in raising her son to follow in his father’s footsteps.

Abdulla Al Marzooqi, a chemical engineer at Adnoc Onshore, reflected on his son Nahyan’s recent sacrifice, expressing both shock and pride. He emphasized the UAE’s unparalleled support, with the royal family paying personal respects during Nahyan’s funeral.

A Day of Reflection

The day began with Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed, Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Court for Development and Fallen Heroes’ Affairs, attending a silent prayer at Wahat Al Karama. The UAE flag was raised as the national anthem played, symbolizing unity and remembrance.

Sheikh Theyab reaffirmed that the fallen heroes’ sacrifices will remain etched in the nation’s history and the hearts of its people for generations.

The Legacy of Commemoration Day

Established in 2015 by the late President Sheikh Khalifa, Commemoration Day honors the bravery of UAE’s heroes. It was first dedicated to Salem Suhail bin Khamis, a policeman who died defending the island of Greater Tunb on November 30, 1971.

The Wahat Al Karama memorial, inaugurated in 2016, immortalizes the sacrifices of the UAE’s heroes. Its striking design features 31 towering aluminum-clad panels engraved with the names of the fallen, symbolizing the unity of the seven emirates.

Messages from UAE Leaders

President Sheikh Mohamed shared a heartfelt message on social media, highlighting the bravery and sacrifices of the fallen:
“On Commemoration Day, we solemnly honor the bravery and sacrifice of those who gave their lives in service of the UAE. With enduring gratitude for their efforts to uphold the safety, security, and integrity of our beloved nation, we pray for our heroes to rest in eternal peace and dignity.”

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, expanded the tribute to include military personnel, diplomats, healthcare workers, and others who lost their lives serving the nation.

“They live on, celebrated and dignified, in the annals of our history and the hearts of our people,” he said.

A Nation United

The Commemoration Day ceremony at Wahat Al Karama underscored the UAE’s enduring commitment to honoring its heroes. Through their sacrifices, the nation stands united, embodying values of courage, resilience, and pride.

As the UAE looks forward, the legacy of these heroes continues to inspire future generations, ensuring their sacrifices are never forgotten.
