Defence Minister Rajnath Singh Hints Sindh ‘May Return’ to India, Sparking Diplomatic Tensions

Date:

India’s Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh, has sparked strong diplomatic reactions by hinting that the region of Sindh, a province of Pakistan, “may return to India again someday.” Addressing a Sindhi convention in New Delhi on Sunday, November 23, 2025, Singh emphasized that while Sindh is not a part of India today, it will “always be a part of India civilisationally,” and strategically added, “as far as land is concerned, borders can change.” The remarks underscore the rising rhetorical tensions in the India-Pakistan discourse.

Singh’s comments were rooted in the historical and cultural significance of the region, which was the homeland of the Sindhi people and the center of the Indus Valley Civilization before Partition in 1947. He specifically cited former Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani’s belief that Sindhi Hindus of his generation never fully accepted the separation of Sindh from India, highlighting the shared sacred significance of the Indus River. The Minister concluded that the people of Sindh, regardless of their current location, “will always be our own.”

The sensitive nature of the statement, which refers to a region that is a recognized province of Pakistan, is expected to elicit a strong official response from Islamabad. This border-line rhetoric follows Singh’s earlier assertion in September that Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK) would integrate with India voluntarily. The Defence Minister’s comments come at a time of strained bilateral relations, particularly following the recent four-day conflict with Pakistan.
