China’s Ministry of State Security (MSS) has raised alarms about the potential security risks faced by Chinese students and faculty, particularly in advanced technology fields, during overseas study tours. In an article published on its official WeChat account, the MSS highlighted incidents where students and university staff have been targeted for scrutiny and approached by foreign agents.
The MSS stated that individuals in critical sectors such as advanced technology, national defense, and biomedical sciences are being subjected to heightened border entry inspections. These inspections often involve extensive questioning about their professional expertise, research, and in some cases, compulsory inspections of personal electronic devices.
One such incident involved two students who were detained and interrogated at an airport after arriving separately from their study tour group due to ticketing issues. Officials questioned their identities, academic backgrounds, and reasons for entry before eventually allowing them to proceed.
The MSS has urged Chinese students and staff to remain vigilant during their travels abroad, warning that foreign agents may employ various methods to “win over and brainwash” individuals working in key technological fields. This statement underscores the growing geopolitical tensions surrounding international knowledge exchange and intellectual property.
The MSS article serves as a reminder for Chinese citizens to exercise caution when participating in overseas academic exchanges, especially in industries of strategic importance.
