China Unveils First AI Hospital Town for Virtual Patient Care

Date:

China has launched its first AI hospital town, a virtual environment where AI-generated doctors and nurses treat AI patients. Developed by researchers at Tsinghua University, this innovative project, named “Agent Hospital,” aims to revolutionize medical training and research.

All medical professionals and patients within this simulated world are controlled by intelligent agents powered by large language models (LLMs) that can interact autonomously. This allows for the rapid training of AI doctor agents, enabling them to evolve and improve their ability to treat diseases in a controlled, simulated environment. According to research team leader Liu Yang, the AI hospital can treat 10,000 virtual patients in just a few days, a feat that would take human doctors at least two years to accomplish.

This remarkable efficiency not only accelerates the training of AI models but also offers a risk-free training ground for real medical students, who can practice and propose treatment plans without any risk of harming a human patient.

Furthermore, the system can simulate and predict complex medical scenarios, such as the spread and control of infectious diseases in a specific region. After six months of development, the AI hospital town is reportedly nearing completion and is expected to be operational by the second half of 2024.
