China-Laos Railway Boosts Food Supply, Drives Regional Trade with Surge in Agricultural Exports

Date:

China is strategically utilizing its major infrastructure investment in Laos, the China-Laos Railway, to secure food supply and strengthen regional economic ties. The railway, a flagship project under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), is proving to be a critical link for agricultural trade. In the first seven months of 2025, the railway transported over 3.47 million tonnes of goods, with fruits alone surging 62.8% year-on-year to 171,000 tonnes. This efficiency is enabling Lao farmers to expand production and access international markets, with time-sensitive products like bananas and coffee beans now reaching Chinese and European markets faster and more affordably.

The project is the most prominent part of the larger China–Laos Economic Corridor (CLEC), which also includes the development of industrial parks, logistics hubs, and energy projects like the China–Laos 500 kV Interconnection Project. Officials from both countries have reaffirmed their support for the corridor, which links Kunming in China to Vientiane in Laos. This deeper logistical integration is fostering closer coordination between Lao and Chinese customs authorities to streamline procedures and reduce clearance times for agricultural exports, making Lao goods more competitive and boosting local economies.

Beyond its role in trade, the railway is transforming Laos from a landlocked country into a “land-linked” nation. While the massive investment carries significant debt considerations for Laos, the World Bank projects the railway could expand the country’s aggregate income by up to 21%. The success of the project in rapidly increasing agricultural exports underscores China’s strategy of using infrastructure to deepen economic interdependence, ensure food security, and solidify its influence across Southeast Asia.
